How Stress Can Affect Your Pregnancy

Have you ever been told by your friends or family not to stress during pregnancy because it can affect the baby? Well they were right! Whether you are trying to conceive or already pregnant, decreasing your stress is important in order to create an optimal environment for a healthy pregnancy. Your nervous system regulates every function in your body and keeping it stress free during pregnancy is crucial when your body is constantly changing.

Did you know there are other stressors besides the emotional stress most people often refer to? Emotional, physical, and chemical stressors also known as thoughts, traumas, and toxins cause stress on mom's nervous system. Examples of these stressors are accidents, injuries, biomechanical changes as baby grows, cell phone use, what we put in and on our bodies, chemicals in our everyday products and much more. A stressed nervous system has been shown to not only affect neural development of the baby but also affect mom's ability to function optimally, move, as well as her comfort levels.

Our office is unique in that we have technology that allows our doctors to asses how our bodies are able to handle stress on a day-to-day basis, areas of irritation along the spine, and how the nervous system is functioning and adapting to stress.

We commonly see that when a mom has a stressed nervous system, the following symptoms can occur during pregnancy:

  • Neck and shoulder tension

  • Low back pain, sciatica

  • Nausea

  • Heartburn

  • Weakened immune system

  • Leg cramps

  • Constipation

  • Abdominal tension

  • Pubic bone pain

  • Rib pain

  • Sleep discomfort

  • High blood pressure

  • Low energy

  • Malposition of baby

  • Unlevel pelvis

  • One leg shorter than the other

Specific and gentle chiropractic adjustments can remove the stress on the nervous system which will allow for a healthier, easier, and more comfortable pregnancy.
